Golf 7 R Tuning: More Power for Your R, Flashed Through the App

Depending on the variant, the Golf 7 R leaves the factory with 300 to 310 PS (all power figures on this page are metric PS), and its EA888 Gen3 engine carries clear headroom beyond that. The NGM App puts that headroom in your hands: you flash calibrated Stage 1 and Stage 2 maps onto the engine control unit yourself through the OBD2 port, using the NGM OBD Adapter and your iOS or Android phone. No workshop appointment, no chip swap, no removing the ECU. All four variants are covered: the Golf 7 R as Pre-Facelift (2013-2016) and Facelift (2017-2020), plus the Golf 7 R Variant as Pre-Facelift (2015-2016) and Facelift (2017-2020).

Legal note: driving with optimized maps is not permitted on public roads. The files are meant solely for use on closed race tracks. The optimization can lead to the loss of your vehicle's type approval and the manufacturer warranty, and you use it entirely at your own risk.

Stage 1 & 2

Golf 7 R Stage 1 and Stage 2: The Numbers for Each Variant

All four variants share the EA888 Gen3, yet each one gets its own individually calibrated file. These are the maximum figures:

  • Golf 7 R Pre-Facelift (2.0, 300 PS and 380 Nm stock, 2013-2016): Stage 1 up to 375 PS and 490 Nm, Stage 2 up to 390 PS and 510 Nm
  • Golf 7 R Facelift (2.0, 300-310 PS and 400 Nm stock, 2017-2020): Stage 1 up to 375 PS and 490 Nm, Stage 2 up to 390 PS and 510 Nm
  • Golf 7 R Variant Pre-Facelift (2.0, 310 PS and 400 Nm stock, 2015-2016): Stage 1 up to 375 PS and 490 Nm, Stage 2 up to 390 PS and 510 Nm
  • Golf 7 R Variant Facelift (2.0, 300-310 PS and 400 Nm stock, 2017-2020): Stage 1 up to 370 PS and 490 Nm, Stage 2 up to 390 PS and 510 Nm

Please note: all maximum power figures were measured with 102 octane fuel and represent the maximum achievable output.

Stage 1 and Stage 2 come together in the All-in-One license for the engine control unit, delivered as a download and locked by VIN to exactly one vehicle. Note the small difference on the Variant Facelift: there Stage 1 tops out at 370 PS instead of 375 PS.

Sound

Golf 7 R Pops and Bangs: Crackles via the Sound License

An R should be heard as well as felt. The separate Sound license activates the crackles function on your Golf 7 R, meaning pops and bangs, either on top of Stage 1 or Stage 2 or entirely on its own. It is flashed through the same NGM OBD Adapter and the same app, and like every license it is bound by VIN to your specific vehicle. The sound functions also belong on closed tracks only.

Keep in mind: if your R has a manual gearbox and no drive profile selection, it cannot use the crackles (pops and bangs) function. Check your equipment before ordering the Sound license.

How it works

Flashing Your Golf 7 R: Four Steps to New Software

The whole process happens at your car, not at a workshop:

  • Plug the NGM OBD Adapter into the OBD2 port of your Golf 7 R. The adapter is a one-time purchase and the only hardware you need.
  • Open the NGM App on your iOS or Android phone and pair it with the adapter.
  • The app reads the VIN and automatically detects which of the four R variants you drive.
  • Pick your license and start the flash. The software goes straight onto the control unit.

Tuning data for the Golf 7 R is usually available right away. Only if the app has never been used with your vehicle and the data still has to be prepared does it typically take around 5 days, 14 at most.

FAQ

Golf 7 R Tuning: Frequently Asked Questions

How much power does a Golf 7 R make with Stage 1?

With Stage 1 the Golf 7 R reaches up to 375 PS and 490 Nm. Only the Golf 7 R Variant Facelift (2017-2020) sits slightly below that at up to 370 PS and 490 Nm. For reference, the variants produce 300 to 310 PS from the factory.

Is Golf 7 R tuning with the NGM App allowed on public roads?

No. Driving with optimized maps is not permitted on public roads; the files are meant solely for use on closed race tracks. The optimization can lead to the loss of your type approval and the manufacturer warranty, and you use it at your own risk.

How much power does Golf 7 R Stage 2 deliver?

Stage 2 lifts all four Golf 7 R variants to up to 390 PS and 510 Nm, from the Pre-Facelift with 300 PS stock to the Variant Facelift. Stage 1 and Stage 2 are both part of the All-in-One license.

Which Golf 7 R models does the NGM App support?

Supported are the Golf 7 R Pre-Facelift (300 PS, 2013-2016), the Golf 7 R Facelift (300-310 PS, 2017-2020), the Golf 7 R Variant Pre-Facelift (310 PS, 2015-2016) and the Golf 7 R Variant Facelift (300-310 PS, 2017-2020). The app identifies your variant automatically from the VIN.

What does Golf 7 R tuning cost with the NGM App?

You will find the prices for your vehicle in the license cards at the top of this page, shown in your currency. The All-in-One license and the Sound license are downloads bound to your VIN, plus the NGM OBD Adapter as a one-time purchase, which you use to flash all files yourself.

Do pops and bangs work on every Golf 7 R?

Not on every one. Vehicles with a manual gearbox and no drive profile selection cannot use the crackles (pops and bangs) function. On all other configurations you activate the sound functions through the separate Sound license.

How quickly can I flash my Golf 7 R?

Usually right away, because vehicle data for the Golf 7 R is normally available immediately. Only if the NGM App has never been used with your vehicle and the data still has to be prepared does it typically take around 5 days and at most 14 days.
