OBD adapter vs. diagnostic dongle: reading data is easy, writing software is not
Type "OBD adapter" into a search engine and most of what you'll find are generic ELM327 diagnostic dongles for very little money. They read fault codes and live sensor data. Useful, but strictly one-way. They cannot flash your control units: writing new software is beyond them.

The NGM OBD Adapter is built for the opposite job: flashing. Paired with the NGM App, it writes new software to your engine control unit (ECU) and your transmission control unit (TCU). Writing is a different class of problem than reading: the Bluetooth connection has to stay stable through the entire write process, from the first block to the last. That is exactly what this Bluetooth OBD2 adapter is engineered for.
To be equally clear about what it is not: the NGM OBD Adapter is not a universal diagnostic tool for third-party apps. It does one job, deliberately: flashing ECU and TCU with the NGM App.

How OBD tuning with the NGM App works, step by step
No laptop, no workshop appointment. The whole process runs from your phone:
the adapter goes into your car's OBD2 port.
pair it with the NGM App via Bluetooth (available for iOS on the App Store and Android on the Play Store).
the app recognizes your car automatically by its VIN. Your license is bound to that one vehicle.
the app writes the software to your ECU or TCU, with the adapter holding a stable connection through the entire write process.
Good to know: in most cases the data for your vehicle is already available and you can get started right away. Only if the NGM App has never been used with your vehicle and we still need to prepare the required vehicle data does it take time after the first connection, typically around 5 days and 14 at most. That is not a fault, just preparation. If a track day is on the calendar, connect the adapter early anyway.

And the part that usually only lives in the fine print: driving with optimized settings is not permitted on public roads. Optimized maps belong on closed race tracks, nowhere else. Optimizations can lead to the loss of your vehicle's operating permit (road approval) and the manufacturer's warranty, and you use them at your own risk.

What is an OBD adapter?
An OBD adapter is a small device that plugs into your car's OBD2 port (the standardized diagnostic socket) and connects the vehicle's electronics to another device, typically your smartphone via Bluetooth. Most adapters only read data such as fault codes. The NGM OBD Adapter is built for a different job: together with the NGM App, it writes (flashes) new software to your engine control unit (ECU) and your transmission control unit (TCU).
What's the difference between the NGM adapter and a basic ELM327 dongle?
A basic ELM327 dongle reads fault codes and live data, but it cannot flash your control units. The NGM OBD Adapter holds a stable Bluetooth connection through the entire write process while the NGM App flashes your ECU or TCU. It is not a universal diagnostic tool for third-party apps.

127 VW Group models are supported: Audi (45), Volkswagen (37), Seat (17), Skoda (10), Cupra (9), Porsche (8) and Lamborghini (1), including engines such as the EA888 Gen 3 and Gen 4. The NGM App identifies your exact car by its VIN, so there is no guesswork about compatibility.
Does the NGM App work on iPhone and Android?
Yes. The NGM App is available for iOS on the App Store and for Android on the Play Store. Your phone connects to the NGM OBD Adapter via Bluetooth; the app then identifies your car by its VIN and handles licensing and the entire flashing process for both the engine (ECU) and transmission (TCU) control units.
Why can it take up to 14 days after the first connection?
Usually it doesn't: in most cases the vehicle data is already available and you can start right away. Only if the NGM App has never been used with your vehicle and we still need to prepare the data does it take time, typically around 5 days and up to 14 in exceptional cases. It is not a fault. If a track day is coming up, connect the adapter in good time so everything is ready.
Can I use one adapter on several cars?
Your license is bound to one vehicle: when you connect, the NGM App identifies your car by its VIN and ties the license to exactly that VIN. If you want to flash a second vehicle, that vehicle needs its own license.
Is it legal to drive with optimized settings on public roads?
No. Driving with optimized settings is not permitted on public roads: optimized maps are intended for closed race tracks only.
