Overview.

The EA824 is Volkswagen Group's first 4.0L biturbo V8 and the predecessor of the EA825. Both turbochargers sit in the hot-V between the cylinder banks, and under light load Cylinder on Demand (CoD) shuts down four cylinders.

Factory output ranges from 420 hp in the S6 C7 to 605 hp in the S8 Plus. The engine responds extremely well to tuning, especially with upgraded cooling and ethanol fuel setups.

Weak Points.

Oil Screen Clogging & Turbo Oil Starvation

The single biggest EA824 weak point: the oil supply module has a screen that can clog and starve the hot-V turbos of oil.

This is the number-one cause of turbo failure on this engine. Regular short-interval oil changes with high-quality oil and proactive screen service are essential, especially on tuned cars.

Oil Consumption

Audi acknowledged high oil consumption on the 4.0 TFSI and introduced revised piston rings in later production.

Monitor levels closely between services: running low compounds the oil-starvation risk above.

Fouled spark plugs

Heat Soak & Cooling Stress

Both turbos sit inside the V, so intake and oil temperatures climb fast under sustained load.

An upgraded intercooler/chargecooler and oil cooler help tuned cars hold consistent power.

Carbon Build-Up

The direct-injection V8 accumulates intake-valve deposits over time, like all DI engines.

Walnut blasting roughly every 60,000–90,000 km is commonly recommended to maintain airflow.

Coolant Leaks & Aging Seals

Coolant leaks near the top of the engine or under the intake manifold are common as seals age on higher-mileage cars.

Inspect the upper coolant lines and manifold-area seals during service.

PCV & Oil Separator

The crankcase ventilation and oil-separator system can fail, causing vacuum leaks and oil carryover.

PCV valve and oil-separator replacement restores correct crankcase pressure; a catch can reduces oil carryover on tuned cars.

Valve Float at High Power

At very high power levels, owners have reported valve float on cylinder 6.

A valve-spring shim fix has been used to address this on high-output builds.

Transmission & Driveline Stress

RS6, RS7 and S8 use the ZF 8HP automatic, while S6 and S7 run the DL501 seven-speed S tronic. Both are durable, but big torque figures stress them and the driveline over time.

Regular transmission servicing and a matched TCU tune become more important as power climbs.

Maintenance.

Oil Changes

Both turbochargers sit inside the V. The oil carries away heat that a conventional layout never puts into it, which makes the interval more critical here than on any other engine in the range.

Spark Plug Service

Eight cylinders under high boost. Plug wear scales with cylinder pressure, and tuned V8s go through plugs fastest.

Warm-Up Procedure

Coolant reaches operating temperature well before the oil does. Go by oil temperature, not the coolant gauge, before asking for boost.

Cool-Down Habits

With the turbochargers between the cylinder banks, heat has nowhere to go once the engine stops. A short idle before shutdown protects the bearings.

Cooling System Maintenance

Regularly inspect:

Coolant lines
Intercoolers
Auxiliary pumps
Radiators

Especially important on tuned or track-driven cars.

Transmission Service

Transmission fluid servicing (ZF 8HP or DL501 S tronic depending on model) becomes more important on tuned cars.
